The Helena of the Eastern Islands

St. Lucia is a small island in the Caribbean Sea which has been an independent member of the British Commonwealth since 1979. Its origins come from 1663 when the UK took the island. Since that time, and as the result of the UK's rivalry and constant state of war with France, it changed hands many times between the two countries until 1814. At that point it became definitely British. For this reason, for a long time it was called the East Helena Islands.

When your Caribbean Islands cruise gets to St. Lucia, you will have before you a lush island of volcanic origin and full of contrasts. Descending from your Pullmantur cruise you will see the wildest nature full of mountains, rivers, rain forests and pristine beaches.

St. Lucia, exotic nature

The island of St. Lucia is an especially exotic enclave of the Caribbean Sea. It has a wild nature in which you will feel totally free. Among the highlights for your visit are the Pitons. This natural enclave is composed of two peaks. The highest of them, at 768 meters, represents the black race while the second one, at just over 750 meters, symbolizes the white race.

These two mountains are very characteristic for their height and are the country's national symbols, even being represented on its flag. In 2004, UNESCO declared the site a protected Ecological Reserve and named the area surrounding it a World Heritage Area.

Called the Zone of Environmental Management of the Pitons, it includes the Pitons and coral reefs, which are maintained in an excellent state of preservation.

Among the excursions that you can go on with Pullmantur in Santa Lucia, a highlight is the visit to the Qualibou Volcano. There you can see with your own eyes the remains of a volcano that erupted thousands of years ago but collapsed. So today there is no risk of it erupting again. If you want to enjoy its spectacular waterfalls and sulfur springs, the volcano will fascinate you. It is also well connected and highly accessible so it is a must for your visit.

Otros lugares de especial interés, por su entorno natural único, son el Parque Natural Isla de la Paloma, Gros Islet, el Jardín Botánico Diamods y las grandes zonas de selva tropical, en las que podrás disfrutar de una rica fauna y flora.

Other places of special interest for their unique natural environments are the Natural Park of Paloma Island, Gros Islet, Diamods Botanical Garden and large areas of rainforest where you can enjoy the rich fauna and flora.

St. Lucia and its rich cultural heritage

The island of St. Lucia has a rich cultural heritage strongly marked by the influences of African culture, as the island suffered the slave trade for centuries. In any of its cities you will see this influence. In the capital Castries or Soufrière, at the foot of the Pitons, you will appreciate how the colorful local architecture is reminiscent of cities on the African continent.

In addition, it also posesses a rich musical folklore as you can see in its native dances. In St. Lucia, music is very important. In fact, every May it holds an international Jazz festival to which thousands of people flock to enjoy an unsurpassed event. Another date is the carnival in Santa Lucia which is celebrated in July.

The landscapes of St. Lucia are therefore a set of colors and lines of great exuberance while the jungle areas are a confusion of banana plantations and colonial buildings. An area of special attraction is the Marigot Bay, the tourist epicenter of the island with its vegetation and crystal clear turquoise waters. This corner of the island offers great dining and leisure in a peaceful atmosphere.

St. Lucia is a paradise within reach. This small Caribbean island will fascinate you with its natural landscapes, crystal clear waters and valuable culture.
