Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and the most occidental of the continental Europe. It is located at the mouth of the Tagus. The legend says that Lisbon was founded in one of the trips by Ulysses. The city is a huge melting pot of cultures where Phoenicians and Arabs left their mark, Arabs were the masters for centuries. The port is very active and it is the gateway to the city that captured sailors and merchants in the fifteenth century. Today it is where many cruises across the Atlantic stop.
Lisbon has experienced traumatic events, however they have reinforced it. The most dramatic of them was the famous earthquake that devastated the city in 1755. The reconstruction was carried out under the guidelines established by the Marques de Pombal, an erudite leader who used the grid in his new planning, structure that is apparent in the Baixa neighbourhood. As a characteristic feature, Lisbon is settled on the remains of a volcanic field and it is composed of seven hills which give place to some streets so steep that today prevent the traffic of vehicles.
To move around Lisbon there are three cable cars, a lift and two bridges that connect the city divided by the river Tagus. One of these bridges, the Basque Gama, is the longest in Europe. In the mid-twentieth century there were thirty convents in the city, where the famous cakes of Belem, among others, were produced. The recipe is a mystery that is only known within the factory that still produces them today. Lisbon's cuisine is greedy and therefore offers a multitude of sweets. For this and much more, the best alternative to visit Lisbon is getting lost in those neighbourhoods that radiate charm.
