This is the capital of the Dominican Republic founded on 4th August 1496 by Bartholomew Columbus on the eastern side of the River Ozama. It was the first city founded in America. We will visit the colonial city, arriving at the Columbus Lighthouse where the remains of Christopher Columbus are held. We will also make a stop at the Cathedral of Santo Domingo and the Fortress of Columbus, converted into a museum, just as it was in the past, containing all of its original artefacts. We will walk along the romantic Calle de las Damas, visiting the Amber Museum and we will also have time to browse for typical souvenirs in various shops such as the famous Limé dolls, arts and crafts and Dominican paintings as well as Dominican tobacco, rum and coffee.
